About Jagannath Prasad Choubey ‘Vanmali Ji’

anmali Ji

Between the 1940s and 1960s, Vanmali Ji was an important figure in the world of Hindi fiction. His first short story, “Jildsaaz,” was published in 1934 in the monthly magazine Vishwamitra from Calcutta. For nearly twenty-five years afterward, his stories were regularly published in prominent literary magazines such as Saraswati, Kahani, Vishwamitra, Vishal Bharat, Lokmitra, Bharti, Maya, and Madhuri. Because of the intensity of his experiences, the dramatic impact of his storytelling, and his subtle psychological and social analysis, his stories received wide appreciation from both readers and critics.

Acharya Nanddulare Vajpeyi included Vanmali Ji’s story “Aadmi aur Kutta” in his anthology of selected stories. For nearly twenty years, Vanmali Ji’s stories were taught in several schools and colleges across Madhya Pradesh. He wrote more than a hundred short stories, satirical pieces, and essays. Apart from fiction, his satirical essays were also widely discussed. His stories were regularly broadcast on All India Radio, Indore.

In addition to literature, Vanmali Ji made a significant contribution to the field of education. He was among the leading educationists of undivided Madhya Pradesh. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s call, he worked for several years in adult education. Later, he served as a teacher, headmaster, and Deputy Director in Bilaspur, Khandwa, and Bhopal. Through his books, innovative teaching methods, and his role as a member of committees of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), he earned an important place in the field of education. In 1962, he was honored with the President’s Award by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Vanmali Ji was born on 1 August 1912 in Agra. He spent most of his life in Madhya Pradesh (including present-day Chhattisgarh) and passed away on 30 April 1976 in Bhopal. His first collection of stories, “Jildsaaz,” was published posthumously in 1983, followed by another collection titled “Pratinidhi Kahaniyan” in 1995. In 2009, the first volume of “Vanmali Samagra” was published. In 2011, under the editorship of Santosh Choubey, two volumes titled “Vanmali Smriti” and “Vanmali Srijan” were released.

In recent years, several books centered on Vanmali Ji have also been published, including Das Kahaniyan, Vanmali Ji Ki Sampoorna Kahaniyan, Kala Ka Aadarsh: Kuch Nibandh Kuch Patra, Vanmali: Ek Kriti Vyaktitva, and Das Yuva Alochakon Ki Drishti Mein Vanmali. Many of his stories, such as Jildsaaz, Rail Ka Dibba, and Manjhi, have been adapted for theatre and staged across the country by renowned directors, including Devendra Raj Ankur (former Director of the National School of Drama), Sanjay Mehta, and Manoj Nair.
